We were told the boat we purchased is set up for cruising
and ready to go, just add a captain. Well
if you know me, you know there is always some improvements to make. There are the little projects, like scraping
the old numbers off the bow and putting on new ones, taking the old name off and
putting on the new name (Lesson Plan), performing the name renaming ceremony,
organizing, organizing, and more organizing.
I have also installed an AIS unit and RADAR. Since I will be traveling along the
Intracoastal Waterway and rivers for much of the Great Loop trip, I believe AIS
is a necessary tool to have among your electronics. The unit I have is a class B Transponder unit
which sends and receives updates every 30 seconds at my cruising speed (the
Class A updates every 10 seconds). When
approaching a bend in the river or ICW, it is good to know exactly what is
around the corner. The RADAR unit allows
you to see that something is around the corner, the AIS gives detailed
information. The RADAR unit is a one
that uses an IPad as the screen, and sense I use the IPad with Garmin
Bluecharts for navigation, the Furuno unit will work great for me, I am sure
once I get the mounting all worked out (one of my boat projects left).
Boat projects are just a part of the process. For me, I enjoy working on each project, it
helps me to get to know the systems on the boat. I hope to wrap these projects up the next I
visit the boat (in a week or so) and then I will be posting while at
anchor. Stay tuned……………
