The planning continues.
After all of the research and planning to help a friend move a boat from Ft.
Lauderdale to KY Lake, I have decided to get my Captain’s License (it is officially called an Operator of an
Uninspected Passenger Vessel (OUPV) License). But that dreaded problem with my color vision is rearing its ugly head up
again. If you have good color vision you
don’t know how lucky you are (here is an article to help you understand what
the color deficit person sees http://www.vischeck.com/info/wade.php). It's not that we can't see colors they just look different. When I was working as a mechanic, my boss found out I was "color blind". I happen to be painting an engine at the time and he said to me: "Well you really don't know what color you are painting, it could be blue for all you know". Me: "The color is printed right on the side of the can, I may have color deficiencies but I can still read. Colors looks different to me, but it looks the same each time. Yes if it is a shade off and I can't tell but if the name of color is printed on the can (Alpine Green in this case), then it being a shade off is on the manufacturer". OK down off the soapbox. Anyway, I was able to get a waiver from the FAA for
flying at night after passing the proven proficiency exam, hopefully I can do
the same here (I can pass the Farnsworth Light test, but not those darn circles
with all the dots).
I gained an interest in getting the OUPV License for two reasons. First, it
will help me be more prepared for the Great Loop trip from a safety and passage making standpoint. Second, I may have an interest in working as
a delivery captain. Yes, I recall two
post ago that I was not looking for another job after I retire and I am still not looking for a regular job. But, if the opportunity arises to help someone move a boat and get a little
walking around cash for it, well I can do that.
So wish me luck, I will be studying hard over the next couple of months.
