Waterford NY

 .
Four miles after the Troy Federal Lock (Lock 1) a sign on the west bank of the Hudson River at the junction of the Mohawk River is a sign pointing the way to the Erie Canal.  I think Morehead City, NC should take a note about signage from the NY Canal Corp.

The village of Waterford lays at the mouth of the Mohawk River and has a welcome center at the free dock to welcome those traveling the Erie Canal.
Waterford seems to be a quite little town who welcomes all visitors to the Erie Canal.  However on August 29, 2011 a visitor named Irene came calling and I would guess was not a welcome visitor. If you zoom in on this picture of the visitor center right on the Erie Canal you can see the water line from Hurricane Irene.  Between the rain she dumped and the storm surge the water rose to about 14' above the normal pool.  Waterford is 170 miles up the Hudson and past the Federal Lock at Troy. The Troy lock is a 15' lift above the Hudson (which is at sea level).  Think about the amount of water pushed and rained down into the valley.

Waterford is proud to be the start or the end for those traveling the Erie Canal.  We felt very welcomed by the people we met and the businesses we visited.  One of the grocery stores in town even lets people take grocery carts back to the welcome center (about 1/4 mile away).  There were several of these carts at the welcome center.  I guess if you are kind, you can push one over and then push it back, or you can just pick up one at the store,
The excess water of the Mohawk River is diverted around the "Flight of Five" by a series of channels and dams.

Downtown Waterford
I saw these gutter drains sticking out over the
sidewalk.  I assume it is to keep melting
snow from freezing on the sidewalk.
